REPRESSION AGAINST MUSLIM CITIZENS INTENSIFIES

November 5/2013

Reliable reports reaching SOCEPP, one from Dimtsachin Yisema movement (Hawassa Branch), make it clear that the Addis Abeba regime has intensified its repression against muslim citizens. According to the reports, Mohamed Hassan Abdela, Alemitu Alrmu Nega (female), Luke Desta Geba, Yared Guyo Kuro, Muktar Safi Hassan, Ahmed Abu Ayato, that is a total of 65 muslim citizens have been thrown into the notorious Kofele Prison.

Of the arrested 23 are peasants, 5 are civil servants, 1 is a mendiant, 5 are traders, 8 are students, 5 are daily laborers, 2 are security guards, etc. They are accused under a dubious Penal law article and under the sweeping ani terrorism decree that is used even for jailing independent journalists. The jailed are also falsely accused of destroying public property. It is to be noted that hundreds of muslims peacefully protesting for their rights have been rounded up, beaten and tortured, thrown into hell holes like Kofele, Kaliti, Zwai, etc…  The regime is doing all its repressive best to break the back of the protest movement that has continued for more tha a year and half.

SOCEPP condemns the regime in Addis Abeba, calls for the immediate release of the religious leaders and peaceful protesters that are jailed illegally, and demands an end to the torture and beatings that have intensified ominously.
Release all political prisoners now!!

RAPE AND SODOMIZATION TO BREAK DISSIDENTS/OPPOSITION LEADERS

In Ethiopia where torture is routine and brutal, where dozens have been disappeared, hundreds killed, thousands deprived of their land and subjected to forced resettlement and where the rule of law is dead and buried, the repressive regime has added new brutal actions to break up and incapacitate opposition figures. These methods involve raping of women political leaders and sodomization of arrested men and threat of public exposure of the photos and films. Rape as a method of war is wide spread in the Ogaden too.

A few years back an active female opposition woman was duped to get fainting drunk and photographed naked and in various lewd positions by the regime’s notorious man and wife thugs. The woman was threatened by exposure of these photos over the internet and she had since withdrawn from politics altogether. A greedy singer, who performed for opposition rallies and meetings, was lured from America to Addis Abeba, constrained to make pro regime interviews, then beaten up and sodomized by the political police.  Threatened with exposure, he turned into a singer praising even the ugly looks of the prime minister who died a year ago. This practice of sodomizing make prisoners and threatening exposure in a country that considers such acts humiliating and shameful.

Beating and torturing political prisoners, humiliating them to no end, shooting many to death have failed to break the resolve of the opposition forces arrayed against the repressive regime in Addis Abeba. Hence, the cruel resort to brutal actions that are aimed at breaking the individual and stopping opposition activities. This is also accompanied by wild rumors against opposition leaders.

SOCEPP strongly condemns the brutal and inhuman actions of the regime, the practice of rape and sodomization, the torture and killings.

Lampedusa: The Shame of Fortress Europe

More than 300 bodies are expected to be retrieved at the coast of Lampadusa as a result of the disaster that struck a boat carrying close to 500 desperate refugees from the hell hole that calls itself Libya. Most of the dead refugees were Somalis and Eritreans and we can imagine that there were some Ethiopians too as Ethiopians are prisoners in their hundreds in the containers of the Libyan Desert, left to the mercy of racketeers, sadists and rapists. Ethiopians have also died on the shores of Yemen and in the hands of modern slavery lords from Lebanon to Qatar and beyond.

Lampedusa is the name of fortress Europe, the inevitable result of a wrong and cruel European policy whose xenophobia is crudely manifested by the likes of the Golden Dawn pseudo Nazis of Greece and very many right wing extremist groups all over Europe, the Eastern part included. The harsh policy towards asylum seekers has led to many deportations, to brutalities at frontiers and in holding cages and to many racist and cold blooded aggressions against refugees. Lampedusa is closer to Africa than to Italy and refugees fleeing war, famine, the callous and hard hearted treatment by Libyans and others flee to it as a last desperate attempt to seek safety and a life worthy of a human being. The place is used as entry point to cold hearted Europe and it has become the graveyard of boats and human beings.

SOCEPP hopes that the European countries would not again knowingly push more refugees to die in attempts to seek safety. Fortress Europe is not the way to resolve the crisis at all and a rethink is called for. Those countries that deport or threaten to deport refugees (even to practically Stateless Somalia) should change their policies so as not to endanger more lives.

SOCEPP expresses sympathy to the families of the children, the pregnant women, the young and older refugees who all perished when their rickety boat sank.
